NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Sophomore goalie Sarah Moses made 26 saves to earn her first career shutout, helping the Niagara women's hockey team (9-11-6; 2-2-1 CHA) to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Robert Morris Colonials (13-7-2, 2-2-1 CHA) at Dwyer Arena on Friday night.

Moses' effort helped extend Niagara's unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) and pushed the team into a second place tie with the Colonials.

"We played well tonight," the sophomore goalie said. "I think we got stronger as the game went on and played a sound team game, with plenty of blocked shots."

Moses was busy in the final two periods of play, stopping 24 of the 26 Robert Morris shots to finish the shutout.

"Moses stepped up her game tonight," head coach Josh Sciba said. "She looked poised and confident between the pipes."

After a scoreless first period, Moses stepped up big for the Purple Eagles. Outshot by a 13-4 margin, Moses made several key saves to keep the game scoreless, including a point blank save on Kelsey Thomas in the latter half of a Colonials power-play.

Niagara would take a 1-0 lead into the third period, when freshman Kalli Funk slammed home her sixth goal of the season, a loose puck from the blue paint with 28 seconds left in the middle stanza.

"Tonight was a character win for the team," Sciba said. "Everyone on the team contributed to the victory, doing the little things like blocking shots and making good breakout passes. Tomorrow will be a battle against a good Robert Morris team."

The Purple Eagles finish up the two-game series against the Colonials tomorrow in Pittsburgh, at 7 p.m.
