PRINCETON N.J. - The Niagara women's hockey team took the lead halfway through the second period of play and never looked back, as it defeated the Princeton Tigers, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Baker Arena.
Junior forward
Daniela Dal Colle notched two goals for Niagara (4-5-0), three for the weekend (3-1-4) while sophomore forward
Kaleigh Chippy (2-4-6) contributed two assists to the victory.
"We earned another victory today against a very good Princeton team," said head coach
Josh Sciba. "We took a step forward this weekend and some players really stepped up for us. Abby played well and our combined special teams came through at key moments."
The Tigers (1-1-0) were able to capitalize on one about halfway through the first period. Defender Ali Pankowski and forward Sally Butler set up teammate Denna Laing for her first goal of the season. The Purple Eagles were tied with the Tigers in shots at six a piece, but Princeton had the 1-0 edge.
Chippy placed the puck passed Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber about halfway through the second stanza to even the game at 1-1. Freshman forward
Kayla Raniwsky was credited with the assist. At the 12:53 mark, Princeton forward Julie Johnson went to the box for interference and the Purple Eagles' powerplay unit went to work. Dal Colle netted her first of the game off assists from Chippy and senior
Jocey Kleiber.
Dal Colle found the back of the net again with less than three minutes left in the second period off a feed from Chippy.
The third period saw Princeton pour on the offensive pressure, as they looked to get back in the game. Niagara netminder
Abby Ryplanski however came up big as the Tigers peppered her with 12 shots, compared to the Purple Eagles' two.
Ryplanski stopped 28 shots, while Weber tallied 19 saves for the game.
The Purple Ealges continue their road trip to Burlington, Vt. in their second weekend series of the season to take on the Catamounts in the Gutterson Fieldhouse. The puck is set to drop in both games on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
