Purple Eagles Drop DH At Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Purple Eagles (2-20, 0-2 MAAC) were swept by Fairfield (12-12, 4-1 MAAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Game 1 – Fairfield 5, Niagara 2
Game Recap
  • An RBI single from Matt Ward in the top of the first inning gave NU an early 1-0 lead over the Stags.
  • In the top of the second, Dawson Bailey doubled to left field, scoring Brady Desjardins to put the Purple Eagles ahead, 2-0.
  • The Stags batted in three runs off of two doubles in the home half of the third inning to take a one-run lead over Niagara, 3-2.
  • Vincent Mauro hit a lead-off single in the fourth and Desjardins was walked to put runners on first and second for the Purple Eagles, but they did not get the chance to score and NU remained down by just one, 3-2.
  • Fairfield added one run in the sixth to take a two-run lead over NU, 4-2.
  • With two outs on the board in the top of the seventh, Benny Serrano was walked and then stole second, but the Stags got the final out of the inning to keep the score the same.
  • The Stags scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth and, despite a single from Bailey in the ninth, Fairfield took the first game of the DH, 5-2.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bailey led the Purple Eagles in hits with two.
  • Bailey and Ward each had one RBI.
  • Desjardins and Serrano each had one stolen base for NU.
  • Evan Wilde (1-5) took the loss. He struck out three and allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
 
Game 2 – Fairfield 11, Niagara 5
Game Recap
  • Niagara once again got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over Fairfield after a sacrifice fly from Max Giordano scored Cole Tucker in the top of the second inning.
  • The Stags tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the third inning.
  • It was a true pitcher's duel as both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning.
  • In the top of the sixth frame, a sacrifice fly from Cole O'Connor sent Bailey home and put NU back in the lead, 2-1. An RBI single from Tucker extended Niagara's lead to two, 3-1.
  • The Stags answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to get ahead of NU by two, 5-3.
  • Giordano hit a lead-off homerun in the seventh to cut Fairfield's lead to one, 4-3.
  • The Stags, however, scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a five-run advantage over NU, 9-4.
  • In the eighth, with bases loaded, Giordano was walked and Bailey scored to leave the Purple Eagles trailing by four, 9-5.
  • Fairfield added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and, although Desjardins had a hit in the ninth, the Stags held NU scoreless to win game two, 11-5.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Serrano and Tucker led NU in hits with two each.
  • Giordano had a team-high three RBIs.
  • Serrano had one stolen base.
  • Marcus Cashman fanned seven in 5.0 innings pitched in a no-decision start. He gave up three runs on five hits.
  • Chaz DeLuca (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
