Niagara Downed By Hawks In Series Finale

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Niagara baseball team (2-24, 0-6 MAAC) was defeated by Monmouth (15-14, 6-0 MAAC), 5-1, in the teams' series finale on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Cole O'Connor had a lead-off bunt single in the top of the second inning. He advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a throwing error by the Monmouth catcher. A groundout from Josh Marchese scored O'Connor to give Niagara a 1-0 lead.
  • O'Connor and Dawson Bailey singled in the third and fourth, respectively, but the score remained the same.
  • The Hawks tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Monmouth scored twice to take the lead, 3-1.
  • O'Connor had a leadoff single once again in the top of the seventh and advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts, but NU was not able to score.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Brady Desjardins singled and Bailey was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base for the Purple Eagles. With two outs on the board, both were able to advance on a wild pitch, but the Hawks got the final out and kept Niagara trailing by two, 3-1.
  • The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead, 4-1.
  • O'Connor and Matt Ward hit back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Benny Serrano was walked, loading the bases, but Monmouth struck out the final Niagara batter to earn the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored NU's run.
  • Bailey, Desjardins and Ward each had one hit.
  • Blake MacMillan fanned six and gave up one run on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched in a no-decision.
  • Tommy Bednarski (0-1) took the loss. He walked two and was charged with two runs.
