Niagara Tennis Sweeps MAAC Weekly Awards

EDISON, N.Y. – The Niagara tennis programs swept the MAAC weekly awards with Olivier Dufour-Coursol being named men’s tennis player of the week and Iva Celan earning women’s tennis player of the week honors.

Dufour-Coursol continued his in-form play recently by easing to wins in singles and doubles over Siena and Loyola as the Purple Eagles swept the MAAC weekend. Dufour-Coursol extended his singles winning streak to five matches. He topped Siena’s Peter Collins, 6-4, 6-0, on Saturday and followed with a straight set win over Loyola’s Connor Pietrak, 6-2, 6-0. Dufour-Coursol is now 8-2 in his last 10 matches and is 9-0 this season in three singles. In top doubles action, Dufour-Coursol and David Raymond defeated Siena’s Eric Sumanaru and Ryan Schmitz, 8-2, and Loyola’s Bobby Gorczakowski and Pietrak, 8-6, on Sunday.The duo has won four straight matches.

Celan helped the Niagara Purple Eagles to a weekend sweep of conference-foes Siena and Loyola last weekend. Celan went 4-0 in singles and doubles matches. Celan extended her winning streak in singles to four with victories over Siena’s Cassandra Braz, 6-1, 6-2, and Loyola’s Sabrina Fedele, 6-4, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. Celan and doubles partner Sarah Hellstern blanked Siena’s No. 2 doubles team, 8-0, on Saturday. The duo held off Loyola’s Olivia Ott and Megan Hahn, 9-8 (3), to clinch the doubles point on Sunday.

This is the third straight week a Niagara women has won the weekly award (Sarah Hellstern). 

Niagara is back on the court on March 29 at Wagner.
