Two Seniors Lead The Way For Cross Country At MAAC Championships

Men's Results | Women's Results

BRONX – Senior women's runner Kim Vona finished in 10th place as the women's team finished the 2013 MAAC Cross Country Championships in eighth place with the men's team coming in 10th on Friday afternoon in Van Cortlandt Park.

"I'm extremely pleased with our team's performances today. Van Cortlandt is always a challenging course, and when you add in the long trip away it could be easy to show up with excuses not to do well," head coach Christine Kloiber said.  "But, both the men and women did exactly what we had been planning for them to do."

The senior from Angola, N.Y. finished the 6k women's race in 23:08 for a tenth place finish and medal for the second consecutive season.  Vona topped her 2012 performance, where she finished in 11th, to again set the mark for highest finish since Julie Dickhans' fourth place finish in 2007.

"We knew Kim was in great shape, overall she's been having a phenomenal senior year, but we also knew she'd have to push hard to get the top-10," said Kloiber.  "She executed her race to perfection and earned that 10th place from a lot of hard work and focus. We're happy it all came together."

Three Purple Eagles finished in the top-50 thanks to Stephanie Schmidt's 24:37 and Caroline Hampton's 24:54.  Freshman Maggie Lawler turned in a 25:46 and sophomore Natalie Regan finished in 26:59 to round out the team scoring.

Jacqueline Moyer and Chelsea Caballero also ran for the women and finished in 27:20 and 27:26, respectfully.

As a team, the women finished with 216 points to land inbetween Fairfield's 188 and Manhattan's 233.  Iona won the title with a team score of 30.

Senior Sam Reedy paced the men's team.  The runner from Camillus, N.Y. finished the 8k event in 27:59 and crossed the line in 53rd place.  Jordan Bender was next for NU with a 28:06.  Rhace Colon and Tyler Van Leeuwen finished one after the other with the sophomore turning in a 28:20 and the freshman finishing in 28:27.  Ryan Lamb completed the scoring with his time of 28:57.

Freddie Leiderbach and Matt Pond also ran for the Purple Eagles and scored a 29:33 and a 29:48, respectively.

"Kim and Sam led the way and set the tone for the rest of the squads as they had all year," Kloiber said.  "When you know your lead runners are working hard at the front, that pulls the rest of the team along. Specifically, that was the case for freshman Jordan Bender who had a great first MAACs meet in hanging with Sam for a good portion of the race and for the women that was Caroline Hampton who paced off of Steph to finish 3rd on the squad."

The men's squad finished 10th with 301 points, ahead of Saint Peter's team score of 365.  Iona, who also won the women's race, took the men's title with a team score of 15.

The Purple Eagles have one more event for the 2013 season.  They will head back to the Bronx in two weeks for the NCAA Regionals.
