TOURNAMENT MAAC Championship First Round

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The sixth-seeded Purple Eagles edged No. 3 Rider, 2-1, in the MAAC Championship First Round behind two goals by forward Kelsey Araujo.

SYNOPSIS
In a rematch of last season's first round encounter – in which Niagara won 2-1 at home – the Purple Eagles came away with the same scoreline this season. The Purple Eagles, who avenge a defeat at Rider last month, controlled majority of the game behind a solid backline performance and lethal finishing by Kelsey Araujo.

Niagara gradually took control of the game halfway through the first half and was rewarded with the game's opening goal in the 35th minute. The Broncs tied the game 33 seconds into the start of the second half which shifted momentum to the host. Over the next 10 minutes, Rider had the better of play and nearly took the lead. However, the Purple Eagles withstood the flurry and netted the winning goal in the 69th minute.

Niagara kept Rider at bay for the rest of the contest to setup a meeting with three-time defending champion Monmouth in the semifinals.

MOMENTS
  • 17' – Kelsey Araujo whips in a cross to Emma Lindke at the top of the box and rips a shot that smashes off the crossbar.
  • 35' (GOAL) – MacKenzie Mix starts the break with a ball to Annie Ibey along the left side. Ibey centers her pass to Araujo in the box who one-times it into the upper right corner.
  • 46 (Goal) – Rider scores within one minute in the second half. Lindsey Maslow crosses the ball into the box and Ailis Martin makes just enough connection to direct the ball into the net.
  • 50 – Riders' Sofia Soares' shot just outside the box goes high.
  • 51 – Emily Curteis low driving shot misses wide.
  • 69' (GOAL) – Ibey plays a ball into Djeynaba Thiam at the top of the box and the freshman slips the ball into the path of Araujo who scores her second.
