FLUSHING, N.Y. - The No. 5 seed Niagara women's tennis team topped the No. 4 seed Siena Saints, 4-3, in the 2010 MAAC Tennis Tournament First Round on Friday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Niagara will play No. 1 seed Fairfield in the semifinals on Saturday in a rematch of last season's final.
Niagara (7-17) avenged its regular season defeat to Siena (6-9) by winning four of the six singles matches. The Purple Eagles fell in a 1-0 hole after dropping the doubles point. The No. 1 and 3 teams both lost 8-4; Niagara's only win came in the No. 2 doubles match. Raquel Solis and Brittany Walters defeated Elora Benfer and Danielle Crill, 8-6.
Niagara responded by dominating in singles en route to the win. Hilary Hansen topped Jasleen Sandhu, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles, Solis disposed of Crill, 6-1, 7-5, Alyssa Lucas defeated Jessica Asselin, 6-3, 6-1, and Walters eased past Brittany Filip, 6-1, 6-0, for her ninth win in the last 10 matches.
The Purple Eagles advance to play Fairfield (16-5) in the semifinals on Saturday at noon.
