Anthony Nguyen

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Niagara University Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin announced Thursday that Anthony Nguyen has been named head coach of the men's tennis program.

"Anthony is a solid addition to our Niagara Athletics coaching staff," McLaughlin said. "He brings a high level of playing experience and a fantastic drive to succeed. His work ethic will put our program in the position to be able to win a championship, which is our ultimate goal.”

Nguyen comes to Niagara from The Elkridge Club in Baltimore, Md., where he was the Head Tennis Professional. While there, he taught private and group lessons and coached and assisted in running events.

“I’m excited to be here,” Nguyen said. “We’ve got a good group of guys that I’m excited to work with. There a hard-working group. I’m ready to get started and see how we’ll compete in the MAAC.”

Nguyen has plenty of experience mentoring players and students of the game. He was an assistant coach of the Men’s Tennis program at Drury University while acting as a touring coach and hitting partner for Stefan Borg. Nguyen coached Borg to several wins over top 170 ATP men’s singles players and top 100 ATP men’s doubles players. On top of that, he also received his master’s degree in secondary education from Drury University in 2006.

Nguyen had two nationally ranked No. 1 tennis players, who were also named GLVC Players of the Year while at Drury. Nguyen also had his team ranked in the top-five both years he was there.

The USPTA certified Nguyen had a stellar playing career at Baker University, having been named to the All-HAAC team in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Nguyen helped his team win the conference championship in 2001, before acting as team captain in 2003 and 2004. Nguyen achieved an individual national ranking of 45th in singles, while at Baker. The Southern California native was a top-ranked junior player before attending college.

Nguyen will guide the men's tennis team at the Buffalo Tournament on Sept. 26-28.
