POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Niagara men’s soccer team had 13 players honored as the conference announced its postseason awards on Thursday night, headlined by Carl Haworth (Barrie, Ont.) earning MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team honors.
The rookie finished the regular season second in scoring on the team, with nine goals, four assists and 22 points, which included the hat-trick he notched against Rider in October.
"I'm honored to have earned these awards," Haworth said. "I definitely would not be playing at this level without my teammates, coaches and staff."
The Purple Eagles were well represented on the All-MAAC Teams, with seniors Matt Durand (Melbourne, Australia) and Billy Gustafson (Rochester, N.Y.) along with sophomore Levi Tesch (Wolcott, N.Y.) named to the All-MAAC First Team.
Niagara had just one representative on the All-MAAC Second Team in junior defender Anthony DiBiase (Richmond Hill, Ont.), while joining Haworth on the All-Rookie Team was Michael Pass (Lockport, N.Y.).
The Purps added eight to the All-Academic Team, which was second most in the conference. Seniors Gustafson, Eric Brodfuehrer (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Zach Scholla (Angelica, N.Y.), junior John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) and sophomores Desmond Betteto (Sarnia, Ont.), Jordan DeRoy (Barrie, Ont.), Ryan Fagen (Markham, Ont.) and Matt Hynes (Rochester, N.Y.) were all named to the All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
The Purple Eagles are back in action in the MAAC semifinals on Friday at Tenny Stadium on the campus of Marist College, against the No. 1 seeded Loyola Greyhounds at 4 p.m.
