NIAGARA UN., N.Y. – Sophomore Les Reaney (Ceylon, Sask.) was named Niagara University Athlete of the Week Tuesday, after leading the men’s hockey team to a 6-2 victory over crosstown rival Canisius, Dec. 30. The forward scored a pair of goals in the win.
Reaney got things started in the first period with a power-play tally to give Niagara an early 1-0 lead. The forward redirected a shot in front of the net, helping the Purple Eagles pick up were they left off after the holiday break. In the second period, Reaney skated in alone from the blue line and received the puck down the left side. The sophomore buried a wrister over the Golden Griffin netminder’s shoulder for his career-high 14th goal of the season, giving Niagara a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Reaney continues to skate on the number one line in college hockey, teaming up with senior Sean Bentivoglio (Thorold, Ont.) and Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) for 93 points through 20 games. The forward ranks second in the nation and first in College Hockey America (CHA) with 34 points. Reaney’s 20 assists are tied for first in the CHA and tied for fifth in the NCAA while his 14 goals are second in the conference and tied for eighth nationally.
Reaney and the rest of the Purple Eagles have a pair of road contests this weekend when they travel to Colgate, Jan. 5, and RIT, Jan. 6.
