STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s tennis team toppled the Wagner Seahawks, 6-1, on Friday.
 
“The focus of the team today was good from the beginning of the match,” head coach Anthony Nguyen said. “They did a good job of using today’s match to prepare us for a big conference match tomorrow.”
 
Niagara (10-5) reached double-digit wins for the first time since the 2008-09 season with the win today.
 
The No. 1 doubles team of Hilary Hansen and Maria Ortiz won their third straight match to improve their team-best doubles record to 10-3 on the season.  In two doubles, Sarah Hellstern and Iva Celan blanked their opponent, 8-0, and Jenna McCune and Ashley Ta topped Lauren Hauer and Nikki Arnold in No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
 
NU had little trouble disposing the Seahawks (3-9) in singles, too. Hansen eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicole Vukov in No. 1 singles. Hellstern defeated Arnold, 6-0, 6-1, to remain unbeaten in her career at 13-0. Ta got back into the winning column with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles. Celan won her fifth straight match with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win No. 4 singles and Viki Sardellitti won in six singles over Lauren Hauer, 6-1, 6-4.
 
The Purple Eagles will take their MAAC-leading 4-0 record to Saint Peter’s on Saturday.
