Chan Earns First Win, Softball Splits Day Two of Frost Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After an early afternoon victory, The Niagara softball team (1-3) fell in the second game to split day two of the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial.

Niagara 9, North Carolina Central 1

Senior Jennifer Sansano (1-1) allowed just two hits in five innings en route to a 9-1 win over North Carolina Central (1-9). The win marks Ellie Chan’s first victory as a Division I head coach.

It was an explosive second inning that pushed Niagara into the lead, 7-0. Freshman Taylor Huenink's bases loaded single-shot to right field put the Purple Eagles on the board first. Niagara would go on to score on four of the next 5 batters, including a two-run double by junior Brittany Richberg before the inning’s end.  

The Purple Eagles would bring in one run in each of the final two innings to secure the first victory of 2013.

NC Central would add one run in the top of the third, but were held scoreless through the remaining two innings. Londo Booker (1-5) drew the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits in five innings.

Sophomore Desarae Maldonado was solid offensively, hitting two-for-three while crossing the plate twice.

                                                                                                                                                                                         
Lipscomb 17, Niagara 1

An early offensive output led Lipscomb (6-5) past the Purple Eagles, 17-1.

Niagara was held scoreless through the bottom of the fourth, when Maldonado sent a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in the only run of the game for the Purple Eagles. That same inning, senior Becky Zill doubled into center field, marking her fourth consecutive game with at least one hit.

Lipscomb took the early lead after adding six runs in the opening frame. Kelsey Cartwright paved the way for the Bison, hitting two-for-three with four RBIs in the win.

Junior Kim Bryson (0-1) drew the loss in her 2013 debut, while Lipscomb’s Ashley Anderson (1-1) registered the win.

The Purple Eagles return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. to face Northern Kentucky in the final day of the Frost Classic.
