The Niagara men’s and women’s tennis teams open their respective spring schedules with a dual match against the St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash on Saturday, Jan. 26 at SportsPlex in North Tonawanda, N.Y.
The Niagara men start the spring season with a 2-0 record from the fall season, which includes a MAAC win over Rider. NU went 35-21 in all singles matches and 11-1 in dual matches. Sophomore
David Raymond led the team with an 8-3 mark while advancing to the second round of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional in New Haven, Conn.
Brandon Gallegos was second on the team with a 7-2 record and
Lorenz Schwojer, who has won 12 of his 13 single matches dating back to last season, was 6-1.
The Purple Eagles also did well in doubles and went 6-0 in dual matches against RIT and Rider. The California tandem of
Michael Elortegui and Gallegos knocked off the No. 1 doubles teams from Boston University and Fairfield before falling to the seventh-seeded team from Cornel in the ITA Round of 16.
The Niagara women went 1-1 in the fall season.
Iva Celan won three of her last four matches to propel her record to a team-best 3-2 in singles. Team captain
Hilary Hansen went 2-3 in singles competition, including going 1-2 at the SBU Fall Classic. Hansen fell in the ITA First Round to Brown’s Ashley Noyes to close out the fall season. In doubles play, Hansen and
Maria Ortiz were edged in the ITA First Round.
NU men’s and women’s teams will face the Red Flash who are both 0-1 this season after losing to Navy last weekend.
