Tennis Program Receives ITA Academic Recognition

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced the 2011-12 All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes. The Niagara men’s tennis team was a recipient of the academic team award and six members from the tennis programs were named scholar-athletes.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2011 and spring 2012).

The men’s team qualified on the list with a 3.47 GPA on a 4.00 scale. The team also had the highest GPA amongst all Niagara athletic programs this past season. Five members on the team were recognized as scholar-athletes: Mathieu LacasseDavid Lemieux-SarrasinMike MucciDavid Raymond and Lorenz Schwojer. Women’s tennis freshman Rachel Zilka made the list on the women’s side. 

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters.
