Three Purple Eagles Advance To Next Round At ITA Regionals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Niagara men’s tennis team had three members from the team advance to the second round at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals.

David Raymond, who qualified for the main draw yesterday, rallied from a set down to defeat Boston’s Chanon Varapongsittkul, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0. Raymond will face the No. 1 seed Matija Pecotic from Princeton in the second round on Saturday. Teammate Michael Elortegui fell in his first round match against local rival Buffalo’s Ivan Vereschaga in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The doubles main draw began today and NU’s No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Gallegos and Elortegui topped Boston’s No. 1 team of Josh Friedman and Michael Kopelman, 8-4. The pair will face Fairfield’s Ian Tesmond and Dennis Zlobinsky in the second round on Saturday.
